5 High-Protein Breakfasts Under £1 (UK Recipes)

7 min read

The most common excuse for skipping protein at breakfast? "I don't have time" and "healthy food is expensive."

Let's put both to rest. Here are five breakfasts with 25g+ protein, all costing under £1 per serving, all ready in under 10 minutes. Every ingredient is available at Aldi, Tesco, or any UK supermarket.

Why protein at breakfast matters

Most people eat their biggest protein hit at dinner and neglect breakfast entirely. A slice of toast and a coffee delivers about 4g of protein. That means you're trying to cram 120g+ into lunch, dinner, and snacks — which is much harder than spreading it evenly.

Starting with 25–40g of protein at breakfast has three big benefits:

  • You stay fuller for longer. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient. A high-protein breakfast means fewer mid-morning cravings and less snacking.
  • You hit your daily target more easily. If you bank 30g at breakfast, you only need 30–35g per remaining meal to hit 130g for the day.
  • Your energy stays stable. Protein-rich breakfasts cause a slower, steadier blood sugar response compared to toast or cereal.

1. Greek Yogurt Power Bowl

25g protein | ~95p | 2 minutes

  • 200g Greek yogurt (Aldi, ~80p)
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (~5p)
  • Half a banana, sliced (~8p)
  • Pinch of cinnamon

How to make it

Spoon the yogurt into a bowl, swirl through the peanut butter, top with sliced banana and a pinch of cinnamon. That's it — two minutes, 25g of protein, and it genuinely tastes like dessert.

Why it works

Greek yogurt packs about 10g protein per 100g, and at £1.99 for Aldi's 500g tub it's still one of the cheapest protein sources per gram in the supermarket. The peanut butter and banana turn it into an actual breakfast rather than a snack.

Variations

  • Add a scoop of protein powder (~30p from a bulk bag) to push it to 50g protein
  • Swap banana for a handful of frozen berries, defrosted while you eat
  • Stir in a tablespoon of chia seeds for extra fibre

2. Scrambled Eggs on Toast

26g protein | ~70p | 5 minutes

  • 3 medium eggs (~62p)
  • 1 slice wholemeal bread (~4p)
  • Splash of milk
  • Salt and pepper

How to make it

Crack three eggs into a saucepan with a splash of milk. Stir over medium-low heat until just set — about 3 minutes. Season well with salt, pepper, and a pinch of paprika or smoked paprika if you're feeling fancy.

Why it works

Three eggs deliver 18g of protein plus healthy fats. Combined with a slice of wholemeal toast (about 4g protein) and the splash of milk, you're at 26g. It's the simplest high-protein breakfast that exists.

Make it bigger

  • Add 50g smoked salmon for an extra 13g protein (total: 39g, ~£1.40)
  • Stir in a handful of spinach for zero extra cost
  • Serve on two slices of toast if you need the carbs for training

3. Overnight Protein Oats

32g protein | ~50p | 0 minutes (prep the night before)

  • 50g oats (~4p)
  • 1 scoop protein powder (~30p from a bulk bag)
  • 150ml milk (~10p)
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter (~5p)

How to make it

Mix everything in a jar or container the night before. Refrigerate overnight. Grab it from the fridge in the morning. Zero cooking required.

Why it works

Overnight oats are the ultimate "I have no time" breakfast. The oats soften in the milk, the protein powder adds flavour and protein, and the peanut butter adds healthy fats that keep you full until lunch. If you're meal prepping for the week, you can make five jars on Sunday night.

Variations

  • Chocolate protein powder + banana + peanut butter = Snickers oats
  • Vanilla protein powder + frozen berries + honey = Berry crumble oats
  • Mix in 50g of Greek yogurt for an extra 5g protein and creamier texture

4. Cottage Cheese Toast

28g protein | ~55p | 3 minutes

  • 150g cottage cheese (~48p)
  • 1 slice wholemeal bread (~4p)
  • Everything bagel seasoning or black pepper

How to make it

Toast the bread. Spread cottage cheese on top. Season generously.

Why it works

Cottage cheese has had a massive revival — and for good reason. At around 11g protein per 100g, it's one of the cheapest and most convenient protein sources available. It's lower in fat than most cheeses and has a mild flavour that works with both sweet and savoury toppings.

Variations

  • Top with sliced tomato, cucumber, and a crack of black pepper
  • Sweet version: cottage cheese, sliced banana, drizzle of honey, pinch of cinnamon
  • Add a sliced boiled egg on top for an extra 6g protein

5. Banana Egg Pancakes

25g protein | ~60p | 5 minutes

  • 2 eggs (~42p)
  • 1 banana (~16p)
  • Pinch of cinnamon

How to make it

Mash the banana in a bowl. Whisk in the eggs and a pinch of cinnamon. Cook like small pancakes in a non-stick pan over medium heat — about 2 minutes per side.

Why it works

Three ingredients. Five minutes. No flour, no sugar, no complicated recipes. The banana provides natural sweetness and the eggs provide structure and protein. They're surprisingly filling for something so simple.

Make it higher protein

  • Serve with a dollop of Greek yogurt (+5g protein)
  • Add a scoop of protein powder to the batter (+25g protein, but the texture changes)
  • Top with a tablespoon of peanut butter (+4g protein)

The weekly cost breakdown
