Cancelling Your Meal Kit? What to Do Instead

5 min read

The box stops arriving and, for a few weeks, everything still works: you've still got the habit of a planned week. Then one Tuesday you're standing in the kitchen with nothing decided, and the takeaway app is right there. That gap is where plenty of people who cancel a meal kit end up back where they started.

The fix isn't finding a cheaper box. It's replacing the three things HelloFresh, Gousto or a ready-meal service were actually doing for you: deciding the meals in advance, portioning the ingredients so less goes to waste, and turning that into one focused shop. Do those three things with a pen and a supermarket trip, and you keep the useful part of the box for much less a portion.

Before the last box: check the cut-off

Cancel too late and you'll pay for one more box than you wanted. As of September 2026:

  • HelloFresh says any change to your subscription, cancelling included, must be made by 11:59pm five days before your delivery.
  • Gousto's cut-off is 12 noon, three days before your delivery. Cancelling your subscription doesn't cancel a box you've already chosen recipes for, so cancel that box separately.

Both let you cancel online from your account.

What the box was actually doing

"Just cook normally" is the advice that doesn't work here, or you'd never have signed up for a box. What you're replacing is three specific jobs:

  • The decision was made for you. No standing at the fridge at 6pm wondering what to cook.
  • The quantities were measured out. One courgette, not a pack of three with two going soft in the drawer.
  • The shop was a single action. One delivery covering the week, rather than daily improvising.

Cancel the box and all three disappear at once, unless you rebuild them on purpose.

Rebuilding it yourself

1. Pick five dinners, not seven

Five is a sensible number: it leaves room for a takeaway night or leftovers, so one night going sideways doesn't sink the week. Choose meals you already know how to cook. This isn't the week to learn six new techniques.

2. Write the list from the meals, not the cupboard

The box's real trick was quantities, not recipes. If two of your five dinners use onions, work out the total: three onions, not a 1.5kg net "because it was there". This habit goes a long way to keeping a DIY week's waste down.

3. Batch one dinner for lunches

Pick one dinner that doubles well (a chilli, a curry, a bolognese) and cook extra. That's two or three lunches from one cooking session, which takes the same daily decision off your plate that the box did. Keep two days' worth in the fridge and freeze the rest.

Your first week after cancelling

The first week decides whether the habit sticks, so keep it simple:

  • Write the five dinners down before you shop, on paper or in your notes app
  • Shop once, from the list, rather than topping up daily
  • Cook the batch dinner on day one or two, so lunches are sorted early
  • Leave the last dinner slot open for a takeaway or leftovers, same as the box did

Once that week works, repeat it. The habit is what you're keeping, not any single week's menu.

What it actually costs to do yourself

The ingredients were never the expensive part of a meal kit. You were paying for the planning, the portioning and the delivery, and now you're doing the planning yourself. At Aldi, chicken thighs are £2.99/kg on the bone (£5.99/kg for the boneless fillets our recipes use), beef mince (10% fat) is £4.39 for 500g, and pasta is £1.44–1.50/kg, all from our own price tracker, September 2026.

A balanced solo week at around 2,000 kcal typically comes to £50–55 at Aldi prices (the fresh shop, not cupboard staples), and it covers every meal, not just dinners. Most main meals in our recipe library cost £1.10–2.50 a serving.

For comparison, a three-recipe HelloFresh box for two is about £31.99 plus £4.99 delivery once the introductory offers end, just over £6 a portion (budgetfitter.uk review, September 2026). Gousto's best-value box for two, with five recipes, is listed at £46.50 plus £3.99 delivery, about £5 a portion (Gousto's own price page, September 2026). Smaller boxes cost more per portion. When a box still makes sense

To be fair to the box: if what you really valued was door-to-door delivery (no shop at all, just a box on the step), doing the week yourself won't replace that, because that convenience was never about the food. The switch only makes sense once you realise the planning, not the delivery, was the part you'd miss.

Where Plan X Prep fits

If rebuilding those habits by hand sounds like the admin you cancelled the box to avoid, that's the gap Plan X Prep is built for. It plans your full week (5 meals a day, not just three dinners) from a 1,500+ recipe library, with every recipe costed from 2,000+ real supermarket prices, checked monthly: Aldi first, with Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda filling the gaps. Plans reuse ingredients across the week, so fewer half-used packs end up in the bin. Dinners average £1.85 a serving across the library (as of Sept 2026).

Our beginner's guide to meal prep walks through the same five-dinner method step by step.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do after cancelling HelloFresh or Gousto?
Replace the three things the box did for you: decide five dinners in advance, write your shopping list from the quantities those meals need rather than guessing, and do one focused shop instead of daily improvising. Batch-cook one dinner for lunches. That structure, not the box itself, is what kept the week working.
When do I need to cancel so another box doesn't arrive?
As of September 2026, HelloFresh asks for any change, cancelling included, by 11:59pm five days before your delivery. Gousto's cut-off is 12 noon three days before delivery, and cancelling a Gousto subscription doesn't cancel a box you've already chosen recipes for, so cancel that box as well.
Is it cheaper to plan your own meals than use a meal kit?
Yes, for ingredients. For two people, a three-recipe HelloFresh box works out at just over £6 a portion once introductory discounts end and delivery is added, and Gousto's best-value five-recipe box at about £5 (September 2026). Either covers a handful of dinners. A balanced solo week at around 2,000 kcal typically comes to £50–55 at Aldi prices (fresh food, not cupboard staples) and covers every meal.
Will I go back to takeaways after cancelling a meal kit?
Only if the structure disappears with the box. What stops the takeaway decision is having the week's meals decided in advance. Pick five dinners before you shop, and the same effect can hold without a subscription.
