Sainsbury's doesn't chase the "cheapest in Britain" headlines, and its shelf prices show it. But plenty of people shop there anyway: it's the nearest big store, the range is wider, or the Nectar card's already in their wallet. If that's you, you can still plan a macro-friendly week there without the bill running away with you.
The short answer: scan your Nectar card, look for the Aldi Price Match icon on the basics, build every meal around a few own-brand proteins (lean mince, chicken thigh fillets, tinned tuna, cottage cheese, lentils), and decide five dinners that share ingredients before you go. Prices below come from our own price tracker and were checked in September 2026, unless we say otherwise.
Two things that change a Sainsbury's bill
- Nectar Prices. In Which?'s August 2026 check of 92 everyday groceries, the same basket cost £195.33 at Sainsbury's without a Nectar card and £185.55 with one: about 5% less, and a little under Tesco with a Clubcard (£189.45). The card and the app are free.
- Aldi Price Match. Sainsbury's matches Aldi's price on hundreds of everyday products (basics like pasta, rice, milk and tinned tuna have been on the list), marked with an Aldi Price Match icon in store and online. The list changes, so check the label.
Even with Nectar, that Which? basket came to about 16% more than at Aldi (£159.36). A plan won't change the shelf price, but it does stop the extras that turn a weekly shop into a much bigger one.
The Sainsbury's protein shelf
Anchor every meal on its protein first, then build carbs and veg around it.
- Lean beef mince (5% fat) — £5.05 for 500g (£10.10/kg). It's the mince our recipes use. The 20% fat pack is £3.25 if you'd rather pour the fat off a slow-cooked chilli.
- Turkey mince — the 2% fat 500g pack is £4.95 (£9.90/kg). The 7% fat 750g pack is cheaper per kilo at £5.25 (£7.00/kg), with a bit more fat.
- Lean pork mince (5% fat) — £2.49 for 500g (£4.98/kg), the cheapest lean mince in our Sainsbury's tracker. Good in meatballs, stir-fries and ragù.
- Chicken thigh fillets — £6.95 for a 1kg pack of boneless, skinless fillets (a March 2026 price, the newest we have). Juicier than breast and more forgiving in a batch cook.
- Tinned tuna — chunks in spring water, £2.49 for a 4 × 145g multipack, about 62p a tin.
- Cottage cheese — Graham's natural 300g tub, £1.65 (£5.50/kg).
- Red lentils — £2.60 for a 1kg bag. They bulk out a mince dish or make a dhal on their own.
For breakfasts, Scottish porridge oats are £1.35 for 1kg, or £1.95 for 1.5kg (£1.30/kg). The 1kg tub of Sainsbury's Greek Style Natural Yogurt is £1.70, but it's the creamy kind, not a strained high-protein one: about 4g protein per 100g. Handy with porridge, but not a protein bargain.
A sample week of dinners
Five dinners, shared ingredients, one batch cook. Swap in what you like; it's the shape that matters.
| Night | Dinner | Why it's there |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Turkey chilli with rice | The batch cook: four portions, two of them lunches |
| Tuesday | Chicken thigh and pepper traybake | Half the thigh pack; peppers and onions shared with Monday |
| Wednesday | Tuna pasta bake | A cupboard night, using two tins from the multipack |
| Thursday | Pork meatballs in tomato sauce | Chopped tomatoes and onions shared with Monday |
| Friday | Chicken thigh and lentil curry | Finishes the thigh pack and the lentils |
Leave the weekend for leftovers or a night off. Rotate two breakfasts (porridge with yogurt and fruit, eggs on toast), and keep snacks no-cook: fruit, yogurt, a tub of cottage cheese. Frozen peppers and mixed veg earn their place too: tip in what the recipe needs, reseal the bag, and less goes soft in the salad drawer.
What a Sainsbury's week costs
We haven't priced a full Sainsbury's week, so we won't put a number on one. What we have measured: a balanced solo week at around 2,000 kcal typically comes to £50–55 at Aldi prices (the fresh shop, not cupboard staples). Expect the same week to cost more at Sainsbury's. In that Which? check, it came to about 16% more than Aldi with a Nectar card, and about 23% more without one. We're not quoting a figure for couples or families until we've priced real weeks.
The trade-off is range. Sainsbury's carries far more than a discounter, including free-from and vegetarian lines, which can make a week easier to plan around dietary needs.
Let the plan do the pricing
Working out whether a week's meals come close to your calorie and protein targets, and roughly what they'll cost, is the hard part, not the shopping. Plan X Prep holds 2,000+ real product prices from Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda, checked monthly, and every recipe in its 1,500+ library has an estimated cost per serving. The app doesn't let you pick a store: each ingredient is priced at Aldi first, with Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda filling the gaps. Your week arrives planned around your calorie and protein targets, with an estimated cost for the basket before you leave the house. If you shop at Sainsbury's, expect the till total to come in higher than that estimate.
The same method works with a pen and paper, too. See our Tesco meal plan for the same approach at Tesco, or the Aldi version if you're weighing up a switch.
